Over Seas Travel Tips
- If travelling to areas where there are security risks, consider registering with an agency such as Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, so that the information provided by you will help them find you in an emergency.
- Ensure you have ample supplies of any prescription drugs, as brand names and strengths vary OS. Before leaving home, you should check that your medications are legal in the country you are visiting. You can do this by contacting the embassy or high commission of the country you are visiting.
- Appropriate health insurance before travelling overseas is essential. You should at least be covered for general medical expenses, hospitalisation and medical evacuations.
- Where local tap water is not safe, drink plenty of bottled water (also use this to clean your teeth) and always check the seal on the bottle. And remember ice is water also.
- In areas where mosquitos are active, wear light coloured, loose-fitting clothing that covers your arms and legs.
- Make sure you have a variety of financial options available, such as credit cards or travellers' cheques, US dollars or another readily exchanged hard currency. Money belts are a great way to keep your money safe.
- Vaccinations are necessary, both to protect you from disease and to satisfy local quarantine requirements.
- Deep Venous Thrombosis - During long flights there are a number of simple measures you can take to significantly reduce your risk of developing a DVT. These include maintaining a high fluid intake (not alcohol or caffeine), moving feet and lower legs whilst seated, and getting up and moving about the cabin at regular intervals.
- Take a pair of thongs to wear in the shower.
- If you're scuba diving, don't travel in an aircraft for at least 24 hours after your final dive.
- Remember it is likely that your electrical bit's n' piece's such as hair dryers, modems, etc.. will require adapters, so it is a good idea to get these sorted before you go.
- Keep copies of your ID or passport in your luggage and at home in case of loss or theft.
- When travelling with children always carry photographs of them in your wallet in case you get separated.
- Women travelling in Muslim and far eastern countries should bring suitable attire.
